Socio-environmental Survey

Responsible institution:

Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária e Extensão Rural de Santa Catarina - Centro de Socioeconomia e Planejamento Agrícola (Epagri/CEPA)

Coordinator:

Dr. Luiz Toresan

Goal:

To Identify the most important species in a socioeconomic and cultural perspective, as well as their current and potential uses; to interview farmers living in the surroundings of the IFFSC's sample plots, and to consult experts.

The socio-environmental survey was conducted by means of a questionnaire applied to people living in the surroundings of 123 sample plots (103 cities). In total, 777 rural residents and 130 experts were interviewed.

Within a radius of three kilometers from the sample plots' center, five to ten rural residents were interviewed (one per household). The survey tried to achieve an even representation of genders (50% men, 50% women).

The collected data permitted to evaluate people's perceptions regarding the existence and use of native forests, as well as the legal aspects of the current environmental policy.
